Alexa rolled around in her new bed, if it could even be called that. It had been almost two days since she had gotten any real sleep, then again that was a feeling she was sort of used to. Back home she never found the time to go to sleep, she was always waiting for something to happen. Now that she was in a 'safe' place she still couldn't bring herself to completely fall into a good slumber. As she tossed and turned for a few more hours she finally realized this wasn't going to work. The creaking of the metal below her and the pillow that sank into the mattress was driving her crazy, she wasn't sure what time it was but she was positive the curfew was in effect. The chatter in the hallways had stopped and the agonizing screams of some of the serious patients had finally died off. Still it wasn't enough to make Alexa relax, she needed air and the bars on the windows weren't going to provide that. She rose from her bed and walked over to the closet, grabbing an extra blanket and some towels the nurse had provided earlier.
After stuffing the linen under the sheets on the bed she stood back and looked at it, not exactly the best replica of a human body but it would work. She was sure the nurses just walked in to make sure there was a bed in the body, nothing more. She was sure the weather was cold, but the hospital had only authorized her to wear t-shirts for now because of her cuts. Alexa thought it was a stupid rule, but she wasn't in any mood to argue. She pulled the top sheet off the bed and put it over her shoulders, she couldn't get in trouble for that. Hopefully. She slowly opened the bedroom door and looked down the hall, for now it was clear. She moved quickly down the hall making sure not to be spotted by the few guards walking around. The walk felt like it took forever but eventually she reached the door to the yard, she pushed it open quietly and stepped out into the darkness. The cool breeze danced across her face and a shiver ran up her spine, she closed her eyes and let the air fill her lungs. It was nice to be out of the stuffy, recirculated air of the facility. She walked slowly down the yard, being sure to keep out of any light pouring out of the buildings windows.
Walking out for a few minutes she looked back towards the building, realizing it was a safe distance away she sat down on the ground and pulled the sheet tight against her body. This was her first night at Lucid Manor and every emotion possible was raging through her mind. She wanted to scream, to cry, to light something on fire. But none of that would help her, she was stuck. Miserable and stuck. She pulled her knees in close to her chest and rested her chin on them, her parents hadn't even called the manor to see how she was doing. Not that she really expected them to, it just wasn't a great feeling when those thoughts were proven true. She took a deep breath and looked out at the scenery before her. It was a beautiful night, aside from the cold air, the moon was perfectly secluded behind the clouds and the trees in the distance were a dark navy color. If it weren't for the towering prison walls Alexa could have sworn that she was in some magical place. The night seemed completely perfect, but just like everything else in her life it was quickly ruined. She heard the door of the building swing open, any normal person would stand and immediately start apologizing. Alexa on the other hand sat there, eyes closed, imagining a place that was better than the hell she had suddenly been dropped into.

SO NOW WE'VE COME UPON THE HARDEST THING I'VE EVER DONEITS TELLING YOU THAT I'M A MESS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - With a heavy sigh, Sam leaned back into the smooth black leather desk chair and frowned. His shift would be up soon so he’d decided to check on the entire manor through the security room monitors for a little while. Blue eyes shifted to the right and glanced down at the large dog on the floor next to him. Since starting at Lucid Manor, the dog had grown and matured a lot. Ares was turning into a dog Sam wished he would have had on several search and rescue missions back home. A small smile formed on his lips when Ares raise his head and tilted it, as if asking Sam a silent question. With a quick pat on the dogs head, he turned back to watch the several large security monitors just in time to see someone slinking down the hallway. He checked the map below the monitor to see which room number it was, try to find out who he was dealing with before he confronted them. Unfortunately there wasn’t much to go on except for a recently scribbled in name, Alexa Brace. Deciding she must be new, he went back to looking up at the screen. He watched her veer off into the yard with nothing more for warmth then a sheet wrapped tightly around her. With a heavy sigh, he patted his leg for Ares to follow him as grabbed his security jacket and walked out the door.
It didn’t take long to get to the yard, and Sam was thankful that most of the patients were in their beds asleep. Otherwise he might have had to call one of the other guards around the facility to deal with this. It wasn’t that he in particularly felt like dealing with this problem- but it was something to pass the time. Shoving his hands into his pockets he let out a cool breath, watching as the exhaled air turned into a tiny steam cloud. Yeah, much to cold for someone to be out with nothing but a sheet around him or her, not to mention it was well after curfew. But if she were new like he was thinking she was, he’d need to approach the situation cautiously. Before he could even open his mouth to speak, Ares was already rushing towards the girl- and Sam recognized the dopey look on the dog’s face. If he didn’t reign him under control, the girl was going to get licked to death.
“Ares! Heel. “
He watched as the dog came to a halt and sat down in front of the girl, tilting his head with an almost human gaze and peering at her with those odd bi-colored eyes of his. Sam let out a nervous sigh, Ares had gotten a lot better but there still was a ton of work to be done. At least the jumping on random patients and staff thing was over.
“Hey. Ms. Brace right? My name’s Sam and this is Ares. I’m a security guard here at the manor. Everything alright?”
He’d check on her first, before alerting her to the obvious fact she was out past curfew. Sam wasn’t heartless and he could see on the girls face that something was going through her head. Did he expect her to actually tell him why she’d come out into the chilly night air after curfew with nothing but a sheet for warmth? No, not in the least. But he wasn’t going to ignore the fact either. After all, patient safety was his number one priority.

Alexa looked up, a bit confused, at the dog in front of her. For a moment she was sure she was hallucinating the whole thing until the small whimper and head tilt made her heart melt. She reached out her hand and patted the dog on the top of the head, scratching gently behind his ear. As the owner of the dog approached and spoke Alexa simply shook her head, keeping her attention on the dog. It was something that made her feel better, the dog was comforting her more than any vivid wonderland could. The dog's fur was warm and it quickly made the blood flow back into her hand, she scratched him a few more times and then turned her attention up to the man speaking to her. "Nice to meet you Sam." She said gently, returning her hand to her knee and pulling the sheet in closer. "I just needed some air, I felt like I was drowning in there."
Another cold breeze blew through the yard causing Alexa to shiver beneath the crisp white sheet. She knew Sam would more than likely force her to go back inside, and she really didn't want that. She took in a deep breath and looked out at the trees again, they towered high and free outside the huge concrete walls. Alexa wanted so badly to be out there as well, to be able to roam around freely. "I don't belong here..." She spoke softly in almost a whisper. Maybe she had messed up a few things in her life and had some tendencies that others found strange. But that wasn't something worth locking her away for was it? She thought back quickly about the conversation she had with the boy when she first arrived. How he told her that you were basically here until you left on metal gurney with a name tag on your toe. She swallowed hard and glanced back over at Sam. She analyzed him for a moment, his eyes sparkling in the moonlight and the way the light poured over his face. He didn't look like a guard, he wasn't rough and harsh. He seemed gentle and warm, but then again maybe he was just putting up a facade so that she fell into it.
The thought quickly vanished as she thought of a way to buy some more time outside. This would probably be her only opportunity out here, more than likely she would get in some sort of trouble for sneaking out after curfew and being outside. This place didn't play around with the rules, at least that's what she had been told. Alexa didn't expect any special treatment because she was new, so she had to think of something quick that would prevent Sam from ushering her back into the Manor. The boys speech from earlier rushed back to her mind and she opened her mouth once more. "Is it true there's no way out of here." She asked as sincerely as possible. Alexa prayed his answer would be one that she wanted to hear, however she prepared herself for whatever would come out of his mouth. As she waited calmly for his response her attention drifted back to the dog in front of her. She brought her hand to his head once more as a smile crept across her face. "He's beautiful." She spoke quietly again, not really expecting a response.

SO NOW WE'VE COME UPON THE HARDEST THING I'VE EVER DONEITS TELLING YOU THAT I'M A MESS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sam couldn’t help but visibly relax when she reached out and started petting Ares. When it came to introducing him to patients, Sam was always a little on edge. The 100lbs berner could be a little intimidating visually, but the dog was just an overgrown teddy bear if you asked Sam. Not to be mistaken though, on command Ares could turn into a dangerous weapon. But someone would never know it by just watching him interact with Alexa. Ares shifted forward a little, almost as if crawling with his paws but never moving from his seated position in front of her. When the girl spoke, Sam shifted his attention from Ares to her, listening to her words thoughtfully. He could understand the need to get some air, especially if she was new to the asylum. Hell, Sam had to dip out for a small break to catch some fresh air every now and then. It seemed to him that regardless of which side you were on, being at the manor was hell for everyone.
His stayed silent though, preferring the stillness around them to the chaos that he assumed would ensue if he overstepped boundaries. That was, until she spoke once more and he noticed the shiver course throughout her body beneath the sheet. Even though he’d heard it a million times from a million different patients, the phrase I don’t belong here pulled at him every time. No one ever felt that they belonged in an institution such as this. But unfortunately, about 99 percent of them were wrong. Most of them needed help in some way, but it wasn’t Sam’s job to help them- only to protect them. But still, you couldn’t help but feel sorry for the patients in some way. And sympathy was something he tried to restrain from ever feeling for others because he didn’t appreciate it when people expressed it for him. Sam watched her quietly for a few more minutes, or at least until she spoke again. A heavy sigh left his lips as he slipped out of his jacket and slowly draped it around her shoulders. Sam was used to dealing with the cold. Long nights in the middle of dense woods searching for those who most assumed were already dead had created an almost survivability trait in him. He had to remind himself constantly that not everyone shared that. Even though he knew he could get in trouble for letting her stay out a little longer, he could tell she probably needed the time and space away from her new world.
“That’s not true at all. People come and go all of the time. They just have to make sure your okay before they let you go. Some patients wont ever leave, but most of them will at some point. They just have to recognize their problem want to get better.”
It was true enough. A lot of the high profilers would be here for life and he could name a couple right off the bat that even made him nervous to be around, but that wasn’t what she needed to hear right now. And judging from the look of her, he didn’t deem her a high profile. But then, looks could always be misleading.
“Ares? He’s a big push over if you ask me.”
It was then Sam did something he hadn’t expected nor intended on ever doing. He sat down beside the girl on the ground, head tilted up looking at the sky in deep thought. Alexa didn't act like the delusional patients he was used to dealing with, and in a lot of ways that made him feel more comfortable then he should. Reaching out with a small smile, he rubbed Ares on the neck and the dog laid down in front of them, slightly resting on the girl’s legs. Sam wondered if maybe Ares could tell she was cold. Something resembling affection flickered across Sam’s face but before he could really think on it, he spoke once more.
“He’s a good dog. Would you believe that not even a few months ago he was eating out of trashcans and living in an ally? He’s come a long way because someone gave him the time of day and believed in him. Its not so much different then the guys here.”
Blue gaze shifted to look back at her once more, a friendly smile drawing on his features. He took the moment to really study the girl. Alexa was a very attractive girl and he noticed she looked about his age, maybe a year or so younger. To him, she didn’t look like a patient. She seemed almost lost, like one of the many people he'd searched and rescued before. But once again he had to remind himself that she was indeed a patient and it wasn’t his job to diagnose her- just protect her. But the look on her face removed any motivation he had to redirect their conversation inside. Surely it wouldn’t hurt anything to give her a few more minutes out here.
“We can’t stay out here long. I don’t want you to get sick. But if you want, we can stay out here for a little while longer and then I can take you to your room?”

As another chill ran up the girls spine she felt the warmth of Sam's jacket drape across her shoulders. Alexa wasn't sure how to react, she wasn't expecting the guard to be so nice. Part of her wanted to question it, but the other part just wanted to take it in. She smiled warmly at the gesture but kept her attention on the dog. She was horrible at making eye contact, anything more than a quick glance in someone's eyes was rare for Alexa. Then again she normally wasn't one to have a conversation with some random person, but this place was all about changing and showing them you could get better. Besides, what would it hurt having a conversation with one of the guards she would probably never have to talk to again. The panic of talking to him was quickly ignored as she heard him talk about the chances of getting out of there, it felt good to hear something along the lines of what she had hoped for. Obviously she had been lied to earlier, which in all honesty from a patients point of view it probably would feel like they were here for a lifetime. She pushed the thought aside realizing there was nothing she could do to change her circumstances, she needed to just suck it up and enjoy the time she was given, away from her parents.
"Ares? He’s a big push over if you ask me" Alexa smiled and ran her hands through the dogs fur once more. It was nice to have something around that she knew wasn't secretly judging her or analyzing her every move. Alexa had only one pet when she grew up, a goldfish she named Meep. It wasn't the best pet in the world, but she had more love for that tiny fish than any person in her life. Just to have something you could confide in and give all your deepest secrets to and know that they will never tell a soul was the best feeling imaginable. Unfortunately for Alexa she hadn't found any of those qualities in any person she had met, sure at first they gave off the idea they were trustworthy. But more often than not they found a way to back stab you. "Ares," She repeated with a smile, "I like that." Just as it seemed she was getting comfortable Alexa's walls quickly shot back up as she felt Sam sit down beside her. No one had ever taken the initiative to 'hang out' with Alexa, they normally grew bored of her shyness and walked off. But Sam seemed different then the rest, at least for now he did. She wasn't sure how to approach him or what to talk about. Here was someone actually willing to spend some time with her and she was stuck. Luckily for her, Sam continued talking.
Alexa listened closely to Sam's story about his dog. She felt like she could compare to the canine, not that she had been eating out of garbage cans or anything. But the sense of being abandoned and fending for yourself was something all too common for her. She admired the idea that Sam had taken Ares in and made him better, in a way it made her feel more comfortable around him. She smiled genuinely and looked over at Sam, trying her best to keep eye contact with him. "You're like his hero." The dog shuffled closer as Alexa stopped petting him, nudging her arm with his snout. She laughed lightly and returned her hand to the top of his head. It had been a long time since she had laughed and she had almost forgotten how great it felt. Alexa could feel Sam's eyes on her, but didn't really mind it. She figured he was just analyzing her up like the rest of the staff had been doing throughout the day. As his voice filled her ears again she looked back towards him.
“We can’t stay out here long. I don’t want you to get sick. But if you want, we can stay out here for a little while longer and then I can take you to your room?” She smiled again and shook her head. It was strange to have someone care about her getting sick, or even give a damn that she was in front of them. The feeling was nice and something she didn't want to lose, unfortunately she wasn't a stupid girl. She realized after a few minutes Sam would bring her back in, give her some sort of curfew talk, and that would be the end of it. She would most likely never talk to him again. That feeling trumped the feeling of being cared for, that feeling was the reason Alexa refused to build any sort of relationship with people. She took a deep breath and stared down at the ground. "I would like that." She said softly. He was giving her a little more time, time she could use to talk. It wasn't like her to long for communication with someone else, but she knew once she got back inside the manor there was absolutely nobody she would be wanting to talk to. She pushed aside her fears and the worry that lingered in the back of her mind and returned her gaze to Sam. Her eyes met his for a moment and she froze. His eyes were intimidating, but not in a threatening way. He had the kind of eyes someone could easily get lost in, ones that you could stare at for hours and each minute get a different feeling. She soon realized how awkward she looked and returned her attention to Ares. "So how long have you been here Sam?" She asked, hoping he wasn't freaked out by her awkward staring.

SO NOW WE'VE COME UPON THE HARDEST THING I'VE EVER DONEITS TELLING YOU THAT I'M A MESS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sam shrugged a little at her comment about being Ares hero. Honestly the dog was the hero, not him. If it hadn’t been for Ares, he’d probably still be neck deep in trouble and in and out of bars every night so incredibly wasted that he wouldn’t be able to remember his own name. As it stood now those nights still happened but they were far and few between. Deep thoughtful blue eyes settled to watch Ares and the girl, once again thankful the large brute was behaving so well. Even with all of the training, Ares had his rough spots. Without even realizing it, he commented on her observation- his voice calm and collected even though his thoughts were all over the place.
“Sometimes it feels like he’s the hero.”
Immediately he realized what he’d said but shrugged it off as if it was nothing. Instead, he mad himself focus on her response to his offer to let her stay outside longer. Sam couldn’t help but feel a little relieved that she’d complied with his statement. The ball was in her court now so to speak, and this night could end in two different ways. Option A, they stayed out in the chilly night for a little while longer talking, an attempt by him to make her more comfortable. And then option B; he would forcefully have to take her to her room. Thankfully, it seemed option A was the winner for the night. At her question, Sam smiled gently at her before turning to look across the yard.
“I’ve been here for about four months so not too long. My brother Mateo actually offered me the job. He’s the head of the K9 unit. You’ll probably see him around with Rasta, his Doberman.”
He let his voice fall quiet, just enjoying the cool night air. Even without his jacket on there were enough layers to his uniform to keep him warm. Sam watched her out of his peripheral vision, slowly catching on to how nervous she seemed when she looked at him in the eyes. Unconsciously he made a mental note to make sure he didn’t make her uncomfortable by trying to keep eye contact. It was just an etiquette his parents had bred into him, making sure he grew up in this most civil ways possible. Boy would they be shocked to see him now.
“So I know its not a charming castle by any means, but has your stay here been alright so far?”
It was a simple question, one she could answer without saying to many personal things if she didn’t feel like it. Or maybe she’d open up a little more, who really knew? Sam glanced over at her once more, seemingly deep in thought about something before speaking once more.
“Are you warm enough Ms.Brace?”

Alexa listened as Sam talked about working at the Manor and his brother. She couldn't help but let out a little smile. She had always loved hearing about peoples families and how happy they could be. It reminded her that there were decent people out there, maybe you had to search hard for them, but they were always there. She swore to herself that when she had kids they would never have to imagine what it would be like to have a family like that, they would be the ones telling the stories like Sam had been doing. She grinned again and looked down at Ares who had quietly fell asleep on her lap. For a moment she had forgotten where she was, the whole idea of being in an institution had vanished and she was content. Maybe it was the comfort she got from Ares, or maybe it was the attention she was getting from Sam. Either or she didn't want it to end. She wasn't sure of the feeling she was getting, but it was something new and interesting that she would be stupid to pass up.
Once again Sam's voice filled her ears and she smiled. “So I know its not a charming castle by any means, but has your stay here been alright so far?” His comment unfortunately brought her back to reality, and there she was once more staring at the towering concrete wall. She shrugged at his question before returning her gaze back in his direction. "It's not too bad," She smiled a bit, "Some people help me forget I'm even here." Alexa paused for a moment, not really sure where she was trying to go with that statement. She knew she was never good at talking to people, especially guys. She didn't want Sam to get the wrong impression of her and she definitely didn't want him to walk away. "I just mean, it's nice to be away." She could feel her face growing red as she fought for the right words. Trying her best to change the subject she focused in on what Sam had asked her a few seconds before.
Looking down at his jacket she shook her head, "Yes, thank you. Did you want your jacket back?" She turned towards him, reaching for the zipper. "You know, you can call me Alexa." She smiled at him. Maybe he wasn't allowed to call patients by their first names, after all he was staff. She had almost forgotten about that as well, even though he had been telling her about his job and the story about Ares she still didn't want to believe that he may have some ulterior motive to talk to her. She hated that her mind always wandered to the negative of everything, she couldn't help it though. Every time she had allowed herself to get close to someone they found a way to hurt her, even the ones that were supposed to protect you and shelter you from the hells of the world. Disappointment was something she was used to, if it happened with Sam she would survive. She couldn't allow herself to show him that it meant any more to her than some random conversation, and that was something she had to do to protect herself.
"I might need to head in soon, before the nurse does her rounds." Alexa was sure the nurse wouldn't even notice, but she knew she had to get herself out of the situation before her mind started wandering again. She wanted to continue talking to Sam but her mind wouldn't allow her to, she was positive that after he had walked her to her room it would be the last time she would talk to him. For those few seconds at the door she'll be able to look at his face, admire his smile, and be completely safe knowing that there will never be anything there to hurt her. She took a deep breath and put a small smile on.

SO NOW WE'VE COME UPON THE HARDEST THING I'VE EVER DONEITS TELLING YOU THAT I'M A MESS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sam was trying to keep his demeanor as relaxed and calm as possible. He’d said something wrong and he knew it, maybe mentioning the manor again? It had been a simple enough question; he’d honestly wanted to make sure she was adjusting to life there without too many problems. Too bad he hadn’t used his brain to think and realize that the last thing she probably wanted to talk about was the asylum. While the smile never wavered from her lips, there was a glimmer of something in her eyes that almost unnerved him. I don’t belong here. It was as simple as that. It made him feel as if she was lost in this hell hole of a world she didn't belong in. It brought out feelings that he'd rather not dwell on.
Some people help me forget I’m even here, she'd said with that same smile. And what made it even worse was the fact she was looking at him. Their gazes caught in an awkward dance, one he wasn’t sure he knew how to play anymore. Was she speaking of him? Was he helping her forget she was here? I just mean it’s nice to be away. The blush that rose to her cheeks pulled at something in his chest but he ignored it, shoving it away like he’d felt nothing. When she went to take off his Jacket he quickly shook his head,
“No you can hold onto it until we get back to your room Alexa.”
Sam spoke her name gently, as if it was some sort of great honor to say. Only moments ago he’d been so formal and now her name seemed to just flow into the conversation, as if he’d spoken it for years. Sam tried not to get too comfortable with the patients because most of them came and went before you could really form any type of bond. Well that and the ones that stayed were normally so dysfunctional you didn’t want a bond to be made. Up until now, it’d been easy to just ignore the patients and treat them as semi-individuals but still on a disconnected level. Ares was the one who continued to make connections to everyone they came across. Blue gaze shifted to look down at the dog, her words barely registering in his head.
“Huh? Oh yeah, well you’re with a guard so you can stay out a bit longer if you want. But I mean if your cold or your ready to go in we can.”
Was that disappointment in his voice he heard? Sam blinked hard, trying to figure out what was going on with him. It was true; part of him didn’t want them to go inside just yet. His mind seemed to be racing with a plethora of discombobulating thoughts. Sam risked a sideways glance at the girl sitting next to him and at the site of her smile- froze. The familiar feeling in his gut confirmed the thoughts racing through his mind and he wondered how it had even happened. The moments of conversation had passed by in mere minutes, making them barely acquaintances. Had it been the distant look in her eyes as she gazed longingly out at the scenery over the wall? The way she’d took to Ares and the way he’d took to her? Or maybe it was the feeling of being lost he got as they talked, old search and rescue instincts kicking into high gear. Whatever it was, it terrified him to a point he couldn’t even explain. The first thing he was doing when he got off was getting a bottle of Jack Daniels and drinking until he couldn’t think anymore because somehow, on some level, Sam was attracted to Alexa.
